PRAISE FOR NINE BAR BLUES

“These stories just might save us all. Continents are burning, cities are drowning, but with Nine Bar Blues Sheree Renée Thomas has given us back our mythologies, our ancestors, the stories and power we’ve given up or been robbed of. Her prose and her craft are as mighty as the blues, as massive and magnificent as the hymn of cicadas.”

Sam J. Miller, author of The Art of Starving, winner 2017 Nebula Award

“Sheree R. Thomas is a blues poet, an afro-futurist tall tale teller. In Nine Bar Blues, she conjures the idiom of our spirits and captures the back beats, upbeats, and downbeats of our lives. She riffs on the days we have lived and also scats visions of the future, terrible and bright. The apocalypse has happened—floods, poison, a plague of bugs, haints, and stars sharp enough to slice the sky—and we have survived! Like her characters, Sheree is a natural born figurer crafting a way out of no way. Nine Bar Blues is more proof that she is a visionary, an international treasure.””

–Andrea Hairston, author of Redwood and Wildfire, winner 2011 Tiptree Award

“Sheree Renée Thomas gives us a whirlpool of poem and story, a 'wild and strangeful breed' of cosmology”

–Tyehimba Jess, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of Olio and Leadbelly

“Invokes the rhythms of African-American ring shouts and the dense, humid atmosphere of the American South.”
